Legends of Wheaton Kiebler
Dinner The Center or History will be honoring three lifelong Wheaton men this year as Wheaton Legends: Joseph Knippen, Harold Muehlfelt, and Lewis V. Morgan, Jr. They will join forty other individuals who have been recognized in previous years. This event is one way the Center promotes Wheaton’s rich heritage. Education programs, exhibits, research assistance, photo reproductions, and the perpetual care of artifacts and archival materials play an important role in connecting us to the past - a role that never ends. We hope you can join us as we honor these men and celebrate our community’s heritage. View your invitation to this event. RSVP by November 12th. Check out sponsorships and prizes. Legends of Wheaton – Honored by Center for History, established in 1995 James Anderson Dignity, Service & Valor – Honoring Our Country’s Military The Center for History hosted its first Veterans program in 2001. In 1999 Alberta Adamson was part of the American Association of Museums for State and Local History’s Discovering Your Connections to History Pathways Committee. As chair of the Community Discovery program, Adamson led a group of museum professionals from across the country in designing a footprint utilizing a variety of topics that could be used by any museum regardless of size. The Center for History served as the model for “Creating PATHYWAYS with Your Community”. The goal was “to engage residents and organizations in an exploration of how the community today connects with its past.” The Center’s project launched in 2000 established a history project, Dignity, Service & Valor, to document the experiences of WWII veterans and their loved ones left at home, along with the economic factors of a nation impacted by war. Since then over a hundred oral histories have been video taped and recorded of veterans from all branches of the military and spouses working at home. These recordings include histories of men who were at Pearl Harbor, fought in Europe and the Pacific, captured and spent years in enemy camps, and life as a Tuskegee airman. The Center’s military collection goes beyond WWII with military uniforms, photographs, and memorabilia dating back to WWI through Desert Storm. Even horrific images from US soldiers of German detention camps in WWII are part of this collection. Another results of the PATHWAYS project is the Center offers WWII programs to students and hosts an annual Veterans lunch. This year the Veterans Lunch will be held in December rather than in November in honor of the 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. All veterans and active duty military are invited to lunch on Thursday, December 15, 2011, 11 am at the Center’s museum, 315 W. Front St., 2nd floor (elevator available), Wheaton, IL. View your invitation to this commemorative lunch.
